Lot Essay

For a short while between 1928 and 1934 Léger turned his back on his mechanical universe and concentrated on the human body and any article of clothing that displayed its imprint, trousers, belts, gloves and jackets. Léger executed this series with close attention to detail. In Fernand Léger Dessins et Gouaches, Paris, 1972, p. 115-116, Jean Cassou and Jean Leymarie discuss this development: 'Les vêtements d'usage aux plis et cassures anthropomorphes, le pantalon, la ceinture, les gants ou la draperies sont dessinés avec l'intensité technique et la vision primitiviste de Durer ou de Van Dyck.'
