A QUANTITY OF POLISHED HARDSTONE SAMPLES, mostly oval and rectangular, one with label inscribed in ink very Rare with Pyrites of Iron (150)
Provenance
The late Major Eustace Robb, Tew Park, Great Tew, Oxford, Christie's house sale, 27-29 May 1987, lot 937(part)

Lot Essay

Tew Park was much refurbished by George Bullock in 1816-1818 for M.R. Boulton, son of the legendary Matthew. M.R. Boulton had purchased Tew in 1815. It is likely that these samples formed part of the stock of the famous Boulton Soho foundry. They were presumably intended to be inserted into the plinths of decorative urns and similar objects.
