Lot Essay
The unusual pierced fretwork columnar canted corners relate to the wardrobe in the V & A ill. in H. D. Molesworth, Three Centuries of Furniture, 1969, fig.267, while the provincial classical rustication, bracket feet and use of both pierced and blind fretwork suggest a North Country origin, and can be compared with cases produced in the last quarter of the 18th Century in the 'Lancashire Chippendale' style (cf. a longcase clock ill. in T. Robinson, The Longcase Clock, London, 1982, p.325, fig.10/60). The swagged neo-classical handle in the French manner is taken from published designs of 1770-80 now in the V & A, illustrated in N. Goodison, Metal-work Pattern Books, FHS, 1975, pp.1-30, fig.22.
