Lot Essay

From the same series of drawings at lot p. 127, q.v. The figure on the recto, numbered '42', is derived from Michelangelo's ignudi and ancestors of Christ in the Sistine Chapel, Rome. The drawings on the verso are close in the somewhat paler, more fluid use of wash to those on the verso of lot ... p. 36, and the agonised nude figure on the left, kneeling with long hair and outstretched arms, is a variation of that on the right of the other sheet. On the right is a prostrate nude figure writing in agony as he suffers disembowelling from a sword, perhaps, Professor Weinglass suggests, Phinehas piercing the Belly of the Israelite with his Javelin, Numbers 25, 7-8
