He rallied his men, and made such good use of their Lewis-gun fire that the enemy failed to reach our line. He then, alone, followed them down a communication trench as they withdrew, and killed two of them within eighty yards of their lines. Throughout two days operations he displayed the greatest coolness and contempt of danger, and set a splendid example to his men"
