A FINE BAKHTIARI CARPET, the ivory field scattered with diagonal rows of alternately facing boteh, the sides with other motifs including floral sprays, an animal and three ewers with basins, in a plain red border of alternating single and double boteh, an inscription cartouche above stating the the carpet was made to the order of Khaqan Ghulam Husayn Khan Bakhtiari, dated AH 1311 (1893-4 AD) between black meandering flowering vine and minor zigzag stripes, a kilim strip at each end (a few very small repairs)

Lot Essay

The title Khaqan denotes the chief of all the Khans, the supreme head of the Bakhtiari peoples. The purple selvedge seen here would give support to the term 'royal', to carpets with this feature, particularly from Senneh
