Lot Essay

Arthur Grimwade in London Goldsmiths 1697-1837 writes, 'John White is a mysterious figure, as his work, somewhat rare, is of high quality and Hugenot character, without there being and apparent connection in his training or parentage with the immigr/ee school. He either was, or employed a fine engraver who made considerable use of a grining mask of Hogarthian type in the cartouches enclosing coats-of-arms and in strapwork borders.' The use of such engraving is perfectly illustrated on this bowl
