Lot 162: Original hand-blown bottle, with sloping shoulders and long striated neck. Recorked at the Château in in October 1953. Cork appears to be branded beneath capsule. Label slightly bin-soiled, excellent level.
Lot 163: Bordeaux-style bottle, though clearly old. Recorked at the Château in 1986. Perfect capsule and label, cork branded. Excellent level
Another magnificent vintage, one of four such prior to 1858 the year usually accepted as being the start of the two "golden" pre-phylloxera decades. A hot summer. Big wines.
Tasting note: one of the most beautiful of all the wines in Lloyd Flatt's mammoth tasting, in 1988 of 116 vintages of Lafite, but also excellent served reently at the Château. Fabulously - incredibly - deep colour; yet delicate, fragrant bouquet that held well in the glass; slightly sweet, medium weight, still quite tough though not a big wine, soft, velvety, with marvellous sustaining tannin and acidity.
