The Châteaux of Bordeaux
Charles Mozley and Hugh Johnson
A set of twenty-one original hand printed limited edition lithographs by Charles Mozley with introduction and descriptive text by Hugh Johnson, published in 1975 by Christie's Wine Publications in association with Hedges and Butler.
Number 7 of 50, a de luxe edition, the lithographs printed on Arjomari Rives paper, hand made in France, and a quality no longer available, mounted, the volume bound in half wine-red Nigerian goatskin by Zaehnsdorf, the cover and spine with title, artist and author in gold lettering, together with slip case. The title page autographed by Charles Mozley and Hugh Johnson. This is the only bound volume to bear the artist's signature on each of his lithographs.
Charles Mozley, 1915-1991, was one of England's most versatile and brilliant draughtsman. His wickedly witty drawings were a feature of merchants' lists and those of restaurants, notably the Mirabelle; also well known to American book collectors for his illustrations and designs for the Limited Edition Book Club of New York.
Hugh Johnson's name is synonymous with wine. The world's most successful wine writer, his prose further illuminates Mozley's lithographs. Lithographs are not prints. The artist draws on a plate or stone in wax on to which the ink is rolled. The ink is picked up and the drawing transferred under pressure on to special paper. The artist draws, inks and prints each colour separately, the final picture being built up with layers of coloured images. After a limited run the plates are destroyed
The Châteaux of Bordeaux was commissioned by Hedges and Butler, Wine Merchants founded in 1667 and still occupying 17th Century cellars in Regent Street. The following Châteaux are depicted and described: Lafite, Latour, Margaux, Mouton-Rothschild, Haut-Brion, Ausone, Cheval-Blanc, Pétrus, d'Yquem, Beychevelle, Cos d'Estournel, Ducru-Beaucaillou, Gruaud-Larose, d'Issan, Lagrange, Lascombes, Langoa-Barton, La Mission-Haut-Brion, Palmer, Pichon-Longueville, Comtesse de Lalande, and Vieux Château Certan
