Lot Essay

Designed in the Louis XIV style, the mirrored-frame is garlanded and jewelled with polychrome 'crystal' flowers and banded by golden laurel-wreaths. This octagonal mirror is closely related to that in the convent of Guadaloupe, Spain (illustrated in S. Roche, Miroirs, Paris, 1956, nos. 254 and 255). Interestingly Roche remarked, although inspired by Venetian prototypes of the 16th and 17th Centuries, the Guadaloupe mirror belongs to a celebrated group of Spanish mirrors retained in the sacristry of the Escorial illustrated in the guide of El Escorial, p. 97, the Cathedrals of Segoria and Valladolid and such other churches as San Juan de Dios and San Justo in Grenada. However, the mirror in the Escorial was reputedly given by Anne of Austria at a time when Venice was under Hapsburg control, so it is possible that it was imported from Venice, where this type of mirror is generally attributed to.

A related mirror, although with simplified decoration, was sold by the Executors of the late Lady Illingsworth in these Rooms, 4 June 1992, lot 168, while a related Lombard pair is in the Museo Poldi Pezzoli, Milan (S. Colombo, L'Arte del Mobile in Italia, Milan, 1975, fig. 154, and 'Museo Poldi Pezzoli, Ceramiche-Vetri Mobili Arredi', Catalogue, Milan, 1983, p.358, ill. 26-7, Cat. 21-22). A further closely related mirror from the collection of the 6th Earl of Rosebery, was sold from Mentmore Towers, Sotheby's house sale, 20 May 1977, lot 937 and again anonymously, Sotheby's New York, 19 November 1993, lot 6
