The moulded bow-fronted brêche violette marble top above a pierced frieze carved with acanthus C-scrolls and acanthus buds on a pearled hatched ground, the central confronting C-scroll cartouche enclosing a pearled and stop-gadrooned scallop-shell, on scrolled foliate and husk-trailed triple C-scroll legs and block feet, restorations, later blocks, the side-rails cut, the back-rail inscribed R2367, the back-rail probably replaced, the base of the apron with missing element, part 18th Century

Lot Essay

The pier-table's serpentined and acanthus-wrapped frame, with its scallop-shell cartouches and voluted feet, is designed in the Louis XV picturesque manner and relates to patterns by Nicholas Pineau
(d. 1754) engraved as 'Nouveaux Dessins de Pieds de Tables et de Vases et Consoles de sculpture en bois', published in J. Mariette's Architecture à la Mode, 1734
