[DANIELL, William. Select Views of Windsor Castle and Adjacent Scenery. London: W.Daniell, n.d. but mounts watermarked 1831-35].
Oblong 2° (mounts: 470 x 675mm., plates: 300 x 500mm.). 12 FINE HAND-COLOURED AQUATINT PLATES by Daniell, each cut to the edge of the image and mounted on card within a single-line ruled ink border. Unbound as issued in a contemporary half morocco portfolio with two engraved trade labels of J.B.Brown, Stationer, Bookseller & Bookbinder of Castle Street Windsor (portfolio slightly soiled and scuffed at extremities).
FIRST EDITION. VERY RARE. The plates 'are the maturity of an art which first exercised itself upon the Indian landscape, and learnt the chastity of English light.' (T.Sutton The Daniells, 1954.). The views include ten of Windsor Castle, one of Eton, and one of Virginia Water. There are at least two variants noted of this work: the Abbey copy included a title/dedication leaf with the publishers given as Daniell and Moon, Boys & Graves with the imprint written in pencil on the mount of each plate, the title/dedication of the copy examined by Tooley listed Daniell as the sole publisher. This copy would appear to be a third variant: it is without the dedication/title leaf, seven of the plates have small engraved title labels mounted on the verso, four are titled in pencil on the mounts, and one is untitled. Cf.Abbey Scenery 355; cf.Tooley 178.
