Oblong 2° (320 x 470mm.), 19 PLATES, EACH IN 4 STATES, hand-coloured aquatint, tinted aquatint, uncoloured aquatint and etched outline, each with a leaf of text describing the artist's technique with colour samples (title and last 2 plates slightly creased, occasional minor staining and spotting in a few margins). Contemporary red straight-grained morocco, sides with gilt and blind-tooled borders enclosing large key-pattern border and square cornerpieces, spine gilt, g.e. (joints and corners a little worn).

SECOND EDITION. Abbey Life 140 "The idea of this work, Hassell's largest and most interesting publication, was to take a drawing by one of the most celebrated draughtsmen of the age, and to publish four prints showing progressive stages of the work"; Tooley 248.
