[ROWLANDSON, Thomas. The Comforts of Bath]. London: S. W. Fores, 1798.
Oblong 4° (260 x 310mm. including mounts), 12 hand-coloured aquatint plates with grey wash and ruled borders after Rowlandson, each mounted on card, bound in modern red half morocco album, pink cloth boards, spine gilt.
EXTREMELY RARE COMPLETE SET OF THE ORIGINAL EDITION. The plates were designed to illustrate Anstey's New Bath Guide and a reprint in facsimile was published around 1860. They were never issued with text. This set differs slightly from the Abbey and Tooley copies, having three plates only (nos. 8, 9 and 11) without Rowlandson's signature and these also have no plate nos. The Fores imprint is a little faint on three plates. Abbey Scenery 40; Tooley 408. "One of the rarest of Rowlandson items".
