WEST INDIES - Plan of the Island Tobago situated in the Latitude of 11° 10' N and 59.24 West Longitude from the Meridian of London, December 1756.
Manuscript chart on paper, ink and wash, 310 x 460mm, outline of the coast drawn in sepia ink with grey wash outline, obstructions and rocks marked with crosses, anchorage positions by anchors and depths in fathoms. The names of the major bays are in their French and English forms, the coastline marked with Indian settlements and Turtlers huts. Set within rhumb-lines the chart is surmounted by a coastal profile of the island from the North East, title set in ruled border at the upper left hand corner. In the lower right margin is a scale in leagues with a coastal profile of Tobago from the south west. The verso is further annotated 'Draught of the Island Tobago with the Bays & Harbours round it Decem.r 1756', together with notes and instructions on the wooding, watering and victualling for visiting ships. The chart somewhat browned, margins slightly frayed, several fold marks.
An interesting but unsigned 18th century chart of Tobago by a naval officer, showing the British raid in 1749 on the French Fort near present day Canaaan. At this period of Tobago's history both the French and English variously occupied the Island. This chart is clearly less for military use but rather for victualling purposes.
