This picture is sold with a photocopy of a letter from Mr. Eric Young, dated 6 March 1985, attributing it to Juan de Zurbarán. The painting is related in size and format to the 'Plate of Grapes', signed and dated 1639, in the Lung Collection, Bordeaux (W. B. Jordan, catalogue of the exhibition, Spanish Still Life in the Golden Age 1600-1650, Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth, and Toledo Museum of Art, Toledo, Ohio, 1985, p.224, fig.XV.2; A. E. Pérez Sánchez, La Nature Morte Espagnole du XVIIe siècle à Goya, 1987, p.95, pl.84) and the treatment of the figs is strikingly similar to that in the larger 'Basket of Fruit' sold at Sotheby's, 6 December 1989, lot 38
