The Rhapsodies were composed in the summer of 1879 at Pörtschach on the Wörthsee. Brahms spent three extremely productive summers there until he could no longer evade his, usually female, admirers and switched to the resort of Bad Ischl. The Rhapsodies are dedicated to Elisabeth von Herzogenburg, whose singing Brahms greatly admired. The work was first performed at Krefeld on 20 January and were published by .
