VERDI, Giuseppe (1813-1901). Part of an autograph letter signed to Antonio Ghislanzoni, n.p., n.d., discussing the libretto for the triumphal scene in Aida, 1 page, quarto (251 x 202mm.), (creasing at horizontal centre fold, slight foxing)
Verdi requires un attaco magnifico in the exchange between the King, the Priest and the People and wants their lines all to begin with the same word. He finds the Aida's aria belissima but notes that there may be a problem with the rhythm. This is a letter which shows Verdi at work on the details of one of his most famous operas. Ghislanzoni's libretto was based on a scenario by François Auguste Ferdinand Mariette. The opera was first performed in Cairo in December 1871 and at Milan in February the next year.
