MÉRARD SAINT JUST, Simon-Pierre de (1749-1812). Voltaire. Ode. And other poems, plays, and prose. [Paris: not before 1783].

143 x 81 mm. CALLIGRAPHIC MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM, SIGNED BY F.F. FYOT. 84 leaves and two pairs of flyleaves. Roman book script in imitation of printing, pen-and-ink title drawing, a few historiated initials, ornamental head- and tail-pieces. Original gold-tooled red morocco, quintuple roll borders, small tools forming compartments of flat spine, triple rolls on turn-ins, silk liners, blue, white and red headbands, by PIERRE-JOSEPH BISIAUX (binder's ticket), modern slipcase. Provenance: written by Fyot for the author, littérateur and bibliophile, who had most of his works either printed in very limited editions or copied by calligraphers such as Fyot (signed by Mérard in several places, and with a few corrections probably in his hand); bought from Girout, bookseller, 15th August 1831 (inscription signed E.B., also stating that the scribe is a brother of the Fyot who used to be employed by the bookseller Chardin "pour le pain et l'eau").

A catalogue of Mérard Saint Just's library was printed in 1783 by Didot; apart from a number of fictitious texts, it contains his own privately published partly licentious works and four manuscripts by Fyot including two on vellum. The absence of Voltaire provides the date non ante quem. One of the pieces is entitled: ragment de Leltomer, drame en un acte, et en vers, imité de la tragédie de Sakespear, intitulée Les Bestes à Cornes. ALL ARE APPARENTLY UNPUBLISHED. In very fine condition.
