4 volumes, 2° (470 x 320 mm.). engraved portrait of Oudry by J. Tardieu after N. de Largillière, wood-engraved title vignettes and culs-de-lampe, and 275 fine plates, including frontispiece, after JEAN BAPTISTE OUDRY, engraved by Aubert, Baquoy, Cochin, Fessart and others, plate of Le Singe et le Léopard in vol. III in the first state without lettering on the banner. Contemporary French red morocco, sides with triple gilt fillet borders, spines gilt in 7 compartments, lettered in 2, others with flower bouquet and various tools, g.e. (head of spine of 2 vols. slightly chipped, a little rubbed, sides with a few small abrasions, occasional unobtrusive wormholes). Provenance: Ink signature Rob. Slade Doctors Commons on fly-leaf in each volume.

Robert Slade (d. 1835), for many years secretary of the Irish Society and later deputy-lieutenant for Surrey, realised a fortune as a proctor in Doctor's Commons. He was the father of the art benefactor Felix Slade who bequeathed many of his valuable collections to the British Museum and also endowed the Slade Professorships and Slade School.
