Both Mabillon and Montfaucon were members of the Benedictine Congregation of St Maur near Paris. Mabillon's work on Medieval charters provided the foundation of the scientific study of the formal sources of history. Written to settle a learned dispute between the Jesuit and Benedictine orders, he expounded the regular and logical development of the Latin script from the capitals of imperial Rome to the writing of the present time. Montfaucon succeeded to Mabillon's mantle and through his work on Greek texts created the discipline of Byzantine palaeography. (2)
