MARX, Karl. Kapital. Kritika politicheskoi ekonomii [Capital: an Analysis of Political Economy]. St. Petersburg: N.P. Poliakov, 1872-1896.
Three volumes, 8° (vol.I 226 x 150mm., vol.II-III 241 x 153mm.). Half-title in vol.II & III (lacking in vol.I), final blank in vol.III. Small paper fragment adhesed on page 129 in vol.I, some leaves slightly spotted with marginal waterstains, vol.II & III slightly browned. Vol.I in contemporary brown morocco-backed cloth, vol.II & III in black roan-backed boards, repaired. Provenance: some crayon gloss and scoring on a few pages.
FIRST EDITION IN RUSSIAN. Translated by G.A. Lopatin and N.F. Daniel'son, the first volume was the first to appear in a foreign language and published in Russia, with the comment by the Tsar's censor that not many would read the work and even fewer would understand it. In the first year only 1,000 copies were sold (out of an edition of 3,000), but its very publication in Russia was a great joy to Marx; cf. Russian Books printed before 1917, (Moscow, 1964), p.392; PMM 359. (3)
