LIPSIUS, Justus. De Constantia libri duo. Antwerp: Christopher Plantin, 1585.

4° (240 x 170mm.). Woodcut printer's device on title (some browning and staining). Contemporary vellum (ties lacking). Provenance: ROBERT DUDLEY, EARL OF LEICESTER (favorite of Elizabeth I, presentation inscription from the author); Extracts from various classical authors in various early hands. Provenance: Francis Thornhill Baring (armorial bookplate).

A FINE ASSOCIATION COPY. Elizabeth appointed Leicester leader of the force sent in 1585 to aid the States-General in their struggle against Spain. He arrived in Flushing on 10 December to great acclaim, and pageants and processions were arranged in his honour in Flushing, Utrecht and Leyden. Given the Low Countries' later disillusionment with Leicester and the tone of Lipsius' inscription it is probable that the book was presented soon after Leicester's first arrival.
