Lot Essay

This is a preparatory study for south octant of the fresco decoration begun by Vasari and completed by Federico for the cupola of Florence cathedral. The inscription suggests that it represents Fra Stefano, procurator of the Camaldolese Order of Reformed Benedictines and Abbot of Camaldoli in the guise of the Order's founder, Saint Romuald. Federico also included a portrait of the Abbot of Vallombrosa, Niccolò Ungaro, in the fresco
