Lot Essay

Although Ostendorfer is presumed to have been a pupil of Altdorfer, his mature works show a greater kinship to those of Lucas Cranach. Like Cranach he was an eager supporter of the Protestant cause, and produced propagandist prints and portraits in the service of his faith. The combination of coloured chalks in this drawing recall Cranach portrait drawings
