Lot Essay

While he was in Italy (1787-1794), Flaxman drew illustrations for Dante's Divine Comedy which were engraved by Piroli in 1793 and first published in 1807. Most of the studies for Dante are in the Rosenwald collection and in the Fitzwilliam Museum. The volume of finished drawings owned by Thomas Hope is now in the Houghton Library, Harvard College
