Lot Essay

A. Hepplewhite & Co., The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, London, 1788, pl. 107, illustrated a flowered acanthus-scroll pediment centred by a foliate spray, which was adapted from a curtain-pelmet illustrated in R. & J. Adam, Works in Architecture, 1778, pl. VIII, vol. II, no. IV. However, the bold forms of these pelmets with palmette finials reflect the Grecian style of the early 19th century, and were probably designed by George Wyatt who carried out alterations for P. J. Selby circa 1812
