Lot Essay

Matthias de' Medici was the son of Cosimo II de' Medici (1590-1621) and the younger brother of Ferdinand II de' Medici (1610-1670). Intended for the church, he renounced this vocation in April 1629 and followed a military career. No other versions of the present picture are known, although another portrait depicting the sitter as a military commander with a baton is in the Galleria Palatina, Florence (catalogue of the exhibition, Sustermans, Palazzo Pitti, Florence, July-Oct. 1983, p.104, no.XXXIX, illustrated)
