Lot Essay

The pose of the Virgin and Child was inspired by a lost work by Rogier van der Weyden known from many derivations, for instance those by the Master of the Banderoles (M. J. Friedländer, Early Netherlandish Painting, II, 1967, pl.124) and the Master of the Magdalen Legend (idem, XII, 1975, pl.5)
