The passages illustrated are from Volume I, chapter 30, 35, 51, Volume III chapters 2,7, 53,61,65 and Volume IV, chapters 19 and 77, and two others from Volume II and IV with the chapters unspecified
Nixon exhibited ten illustrations to Tristram Shandy at the Royal Academy, 1786, no.472. Owing to an error in the index to the 1786 Royal Academy catalogue, William Sandby and Algernon Graves both record that James Nixon, A.R.A. the miniaturist exhibited these drawings, but reference to the actual catalogue shows that 'J.Nixon H.' (i.e. John Nixon, an Honorary exhibitor) rather than 'J.Nixon A'. (i.e. James Nixon, Associate) exhibited them
The 1787 edition of the works of Sterne, The Beauties of Sterne, contained five plates, the drawings for three of which are in the present lot (Volume III, chapters 2, 7 and 53). The two other plates were also presumably after Nixon. The 1790 edition contains three plates, including Volume III chapters 2 and 53; other drawings by Nixon were used in collected editions
