A later inscription on the reverse of the frame reads ('our Grandmother. 9^th. B. 1902)/Margaret Noble 1786/supposed from the signature and date to be by/Sir Thos Lawrence who is known to have been in his Early days/at that time (1782-1787) painting Crayon portraits in Bath'.
