Lot Essay

The glazing bars in the upper part of this secretaire bookcase are a variation on designs with twin ogee arches, surrounded by an oval that appear in Thomas Sheraton's The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterers Drawing Book, 1793, pl.xxix. Simpler examples, perhaps closer to the present lot, designed by W. Casement are in The Cabinet-Maker's London Book of Prices, 2nd ed., 1793, pl.27.
