Lot Essay

'Jockeying for Position' depicts the schooner class in the solent prior to the start of a race. Every skipper aims to be travelling at full speed and crossing the line simultaneously with the firing of the gun. In this case three schooners, Clara, Susanne and Cicely are surging along neck and neck on the port tack. Behind them Hambourg has gone about and closer inshore, Adela is tacking her sails shaking as she goes through the wind. Closer to the shore still is Cetonia hardening right up prior to doing the same manoeuvre. From left to right, Hambourg, 134ft. overall, 331 tons T.M. Designed by G.L. Watson, built by D & W Henderson 1898 originally called Rainbow. Clara, 107ft. overall, 185 tons T.M. built by J.G. Fay & Co. of Southampton in 1900 designed by J.M. Soper. Susanne, 94ft. overall, 154 tons T.M. designed by Fife, built by A. Inglis, Glasgow in 1904. She was the winner of the Emperors Cup in 1905. Cicely, 113ft. overall, 263 tons T.M. Built in 1902 by Fay & Co of Southampton. Adela, 109ft. overall, 224 tons, T.M., designed by W.C. Storey, built in J.G. Fay & Co., Southampton in 1903. Cetonia 120 ft. overall. Designed by J.M. Soper, built by Camper & Nicholson in Southampton, 1902.
