Lot Essay

Edward Wyon was born in London in 1811 and died in 1885. His father Thomas (d.1830) was the chief engraver of seals at the Royal Mint. Edward studied at the Royal Academy schools and made his debut in 1831. At the Great Exhibition of 1851 he showed a tazza modelled from a Greek original which was subsequently cast by the Art Union.
