Lot Essay

Hoffmann's design for the Café Fledermaus in 1907 is one of the few Kohn models that can definitely be ascribed to Hoffmann. The same design was exhibited by Hoffmann in the country house interior at the Kunstschau in 1908 (see also lot 12), and the model remained one of the firm's most popular designs.
The original pressed plywood seat of the present chair was not used by Kohn on the original painted Fledermaus chairs, but was introduced to their range shortly afterwards, when demand and production was increased.
