Lot Essay

The architect and designer Julius Jirasek studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna under Josef Frank and Oskar Strnad, and began designing furniture for the Hagenauer workshops in 1930. The present design is quite a departure from Viennese tradition born out of the Secession, and shows a more than passing parallel with Bruno Paul's desk chair of 1902 with its sweeping back and arm lines. It also seems to anticipate the work of Scandinavian designers of the immediate post-war period.
In 1952, Jirasek was honoured by the city of Vienna for his contribution to the decorative arts.
