Lot Essay

Field Marshall Prince Blücher was considered, along with Wellington, one of the principal victors of the wars against the French in 1814, and was among those who oversaw Napoleon's abdication and the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy. Turnerelli (1774-1839) first exhibited a plaster bust of Blücher, possibly the one now in the Soane Museum, at the Royal Academy in 1815, and subsequently produced several marble versions of these two giants of the Napoleonic wars. Although it is impossible to identify these particular figures with certainty, it is worth noting that Turnerelli was paid (472 10s by the Prince Regent in 1816 to execute marble busts of Wellington, Blücher, and Platoff.
