Lot Essay

This is a reduced version of a monumental panel made for the series that decorated the First Class Smoking Room of the Normandie liner. The theme of the commission was The Pursuits of Man and the other accompanying panels were The Grape Harvest, Fishing, Sports, and Hunting.
In the definitive panel five horses are pursued and one lassoed by two men on horseback, although the lower section was removed when the panel was rehung on the Ile de France in 1949.
Cf: Marcilhac, op. cit., p. 153 and 316/7 for other versions.

The attribution to Jean Dunand has been confirmed by Bernard Dunand and the lot is accompanied by a certificate to this effect, dated June 1997.
