Lot Essay

Loren Partridge suggested that this may be a primo pensiero for the fresco in the chapel at Caprarola dating from circa 1566-7, a view with which James Mundy concurs. Drawings of the Baptist, possibly related to the same project, are at Berlin (no. 21806) and Stockholm (no. 448).

As Mundy points out the present sheet is strongly influenced by his brother's drawings
