Lot Essay

A study, with a number of differences, for the fresco in the Sala Regia. In the finished work Agresti reversed the positions of the Pope and the King, making the latters's derivation from the figure of Ptolemy in the School of Athens more apparent. He also omitted the dramatically cropped half-length onlookers, and replaced them with a boy playing with a dog. A study for the left hand soldier in the Albertina (J. Gere, Il Manierismo a Roma, Milan, 1970, fig. 20) represents an intermediate stage in the artist's thinking between the present drawing and the fresco
