Lot Essay

The 16th Century inscription presumably refers to Gambarato, a pupil of Giuseppe Salviati and Palma Giovane. The attribution is confirmed by the similarity of the preparatory study in Stockholm for Gambarato's picture in the Palazzo Ducale, Venice Pope Alexander III presenting a ceremonial Parasol to the Doge at Ancona to the present sheet, P. Bjurström, Drawings in Swedish Public Collections 3, Italian Drawings, Stockholm, 1979, no. 75, illustrated. The figure types and the use of watercolour in the present study recall drawings by Rottenhammer who worked in Venice from circa 1596 to 1606
