Lot Essay

Jörg Martin Merz kindly points out that this is related to the engraving signed 'Cyrus Ferri Inv. Pinx. -Jo. Batt. Mannellius Senen. del. - Nicolas Laigniel scul'. The angel derives, in reverse, from Ferri's painting at Valmontone and the kneeling Madonna from Cortona's altarpiece at Cortona, G. Briganti, Pietro da Cortona o della pittura barocca, Florence, 1982, fig. 281. The present drawing is presumably either by Giovanni Battista Manelli or Nicolas Laigniel
