Lot Essay

The clock, symbolic of Industry, is incorporated in a bronze Grecian 'stele' embellished with ormolu bas-reliefs of palm-flowers and Apollo's laurel-festooned griffin, while its altar-plinth serves as a seat for a maiden employed in needlework and assisted by a scissor-bearing child.
