A GERMAN WALNUT AND PARQUETRY BUREAU-CABINET
Circa 1764
Inlaid overall with strapwork reserves, the arched pediment with overhanging moulding above an arched door enclosing a fitted interior with two shaped shelves and three short drawers, above a further short drawer and flanked by a column of five waved drawers to each side, the canted angles with strapwork decoration above the bureau section with a central hinged writing-slope, to the reverse with green paper-lined writing-surface and enclosing a fitted interior with nine variously-sized drawers and a compartment, flanked to each side by two shaped drawers, above the lower section with a moulded and shaped top above three shaped long drawers, on bun feet, with key, the reverse with two fragmentary labels, the reverse of the door inscribed in pencil 'R. 196 ASTON ROAD 13-...', the lockplate to the top door engraved '1764', previously with finials to the top

Lot Essay

A bureau-cabinet of closely related form with the same shaped drawers flanking a half-sunk writing-slope and closely related superstructure, but with canted angles, was sold anonymously in these Rooms, 26 November 1996, lot 68.
