A LOUIS XVI BEAUVAIS PASTORAL TAPESTRY FRAGMENT
Third quarter 18th Century
Woven in wools and silks, depicting to the centre a gentleman lifting a maiden off a donkey flanked to the left by a further maiden and a dog, the background with a cottage and a ruined building, framed by a florally-wrapped column to each side suspending floral garlands and a musical trophy, lacking borders, minor reweaving and patching, stencilled to the reverse '30249', possibly Aubusson

A pastoral tapestry depicting the same scene in reverse and under blue draperies is illustrated in W.G. Thomson, A History of Tapestry, Wakefield, 1973, opposite p. 464, while a design for the florally wrapped columns with landscape views is illustrated in J. Guiffrey, Histoire de La Tapisserie, Tours, 1886, p. 29.
