Lot Essay
Samuel Buckle of Peterborough exhibited in the Fine Arts section of the Great Exhibition of 1851. His calotype landscapes received high praise, and he was awarded a major medal.
Titled views are of Tintern Abbey, St. Mary Cheltenham and the South Side of Lady Chapel, Peterborough. Other views include Peterborough Cathedral, King's College and the Fitzwilliam Museum Cambridge, two large views and possibly others of Kenilworth Castle, Leycester's Hospital and West Gate Chapel Warwick, a street scene with shop fronts possibly also Warwick, two views of a brewery, almshouses, Croyland Abbey Lincolnshire and a river scene with weir. Portraits include a photographer (illus), men fishing, a gentleman posed by a doorway with several classical busts and 'The Three Graces' sculpture and several of a young man. With five photographs of works of art from Henneman's series The Annals of the Artists of Spain for William Stirling (1848), and Roger Fenton's Crimean group The 97th after the defeat of the 18th June 1855.
