Lot Essay

The asymmetrical positioning of the image on its mount reflects Rodchenko's concern with the overall design of the finished work.

Her early work includes visual and transrational poetry, book illustration and graphics. She held several influential positions in educational institutes including that of Research Secretary at INKhUK (The Institute of Artistic Culture) from 1920-21 and as a lecturer in the Arts Studio of the Krupskaia Academy of Communist Education from 1920-25. Between 1923 and 1927 she worked on the magazines Lef and Novyi LEF and later on the magazine SSSR na Stroike [USSR in Construction]. From the mid 1920s she worked extensively with fabric and textiles including theatrical costume, while continuing her work as a graphic designer and artist. Books designed include several for Maiakovskii and in 1956-57 In Close Up for the film director Esfir Shub.
