A GERMAN CROSSBOW with robust steel bow struck on the inner face with a mark, a cross within a circle with stylised coronet above, and secured by cords, wooden tiller swelling towards the middle, the top and bottom surfaces covered in horn and engraved on the latter with strapwork and foliage enclosing a heraldic figure in 16th Century armour, putti playing musical instruments, and the date 1559, the sides inlaid with staghorn panels pierced and engraved with stylised fruit and foliage, musical instruments, elements of armour and a helmeted demi-figure brandishing a sword, horn nut, short iron lugs for cranequin, iron trigger-lever with swivelling safety-catch, folding set trigger set by a string (missing), and small iron stirrup, partly early 17th Century
