A FINE PAIR OF GERMAN FLINTLOCK HOLSTER PISTOLS with two-stage sighted barrels and plain tangs, signed rounded locks each finely chiselled with a grotesque mask in relief on the tail (one finial chipped), with scrolling foliage on the steel, and with foliage and a monster-head on the cock, carved moulded figured walnut full stocks (one with minor chips and cracks), iron mounts chiselled in relief with foliage and including pierced serpentine side-plates, spurred pommels each with grotesque mask cap, and pierced escutcheons chiselled with the full arms of Salm, surmounted by a coronet engraved with the letters WGZS, for Franz Wilhelm, Altgraf zu Salm (d. 1734), turned ramrod-pipes, and original iron-capped ramrods, by Mathias Weins à Coulogne (sic), circa 1700
