Lot Essay

The overglaze painting in gold leaf seen here and on the following lot that partly outlines existing motifs and partly follows its own designs is a feature of a group of Iznik dishes from the seventeenth century. Many, including these two, have similar technical characteristics, such as the widely crackled slightly off-white ground and the form of the flowers on the reverse, indicating that they were made in the same atelier.
